5 questions on Johnny Manziel with The Landry Hat
We caught up with Steven Mullenax of The Landry Hat to hear his thoughts on the possibility of Johnny Manziel playing for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cleveland Browns are expected to cut Johnny Manziel when the new NFL year begins Wednesday.
This means we can finally stop talking about him and his antics here in Cleveland, but it also means a new city may have to take on his personality.
The Dallas Cowboys have been a team name that comes up often when discussing Manziel’s next team, thanks to Jerry Jones and his reputation for being willing to sign just about anyone.
We caught up with Steven Mullenax, editor at The Landry Hat, to get his take on Manziel heading to Dallas.
1. What are your thoughts on Johnny Manziel the NFL quarterback and not the off-the-field circus surrounding him?
Steven: I was initially excited by the prospect of Texas A&M and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel joining the Dallas Cowboys in the 2014 NFL Draft. I thought he could develop behind Tony Romo for a few years and have a chance to be come the Cowboys franchise quarterback. I’m fair less excited by that prospect following his two inconsistent seasons in Cleveland. Manziel has yet to prove that he can overcome his physical limitations on the field to become a quality NFL starter.
2. Do you think Jerry Jones would seriously consider signing Manziel in 2016?
Steven: Yes, I believe he would consider it. But at this point, I’m not sure any NFL team, including Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, would consider signing Manziel. I do believe he’ll get a second chance and maybe even a third, in time. But not until Manziel demonstrates some type of self-control in his life off-the-field.
3. Do you have a problem with Jones going after players with off-the-field issues?
Steven: No, I don’t. As the both Jerry and his son Stephen have echoed in recent weeks, each case is different. And the Cowboys have had success in the past taking risks on players who brought off-the-field baggage with them to Dallas. But it’s a double-edged sword, so the Cowboys understand that it isn’t always going to work out. They are willing to take those kinds of chances depending on the circumstances. And a few bumps in the road will not deter them.
4. Can Manziel be successful in Dallas?
Steven: I think Manziel can be successful anywhere as long as the front office and coaching staff believe in him and are willing to gameplan towards his strengths and build a roster around him. Asking a player like Johnny Football to fit a pre-existing system is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. It’s the same issue Tim Tebow ran into a few years ago.
5. How would Manziel be perceived by fans in Dallas?
Steven: In Dallas, Manziel would be adored. He’s a native Texas who had great college success in-state. It would be a win-win for the organization. Unfortunately, that admiration only opens the doors for more off-the-field issues for the young, troubled quarterback. Until Manziel is mature enough to resist those types of temptations, I’m not sure Dallas would be doing “the person” any favors by signing “the player”.
