Report: Cleveland Browns to finally cut Johnny Manziel today
By Thomas Moore
The Cleveland Browns reportedly will finally make it official and release quarterback Johnny Manziel at some point today.
It has been months in the making, but today is reportedly the day that the Cleveland Browns finally clean up one of the franchise’s biggest mistakes by releasing quarterback Johnny Manziel.
It has long been rumored that the Browns were done with Manziel, but the club was forced to hold onto him until the new league year started on March 9 because of salary cap issues. Once the new year came and Manziel was still on the roster, the story turned to the Browns making one last attempt at getting something, anything, in return for a quarterback with off-the-field issues and limited on-the-field abilities.
While admirable, the idea that another team would be willing to make a trade for Manziel, rather than risk “losing out” on him in the wavier process, is a bit far-fetched. After all, what team wouldn’t want a player that, among other things:
- Was photographed drinking from a bottle of champagne while floating in a pool atop an inflatable swan at a bar in Austin, Texas.
- Had a video show up on Instagram while holding a stack of money to his ear and pretending it’s a phone.
- Had a photograph online showing him tightly rolling a dollar bill in the bathroom of a bar.
- Willingly took off his rookie year without telling his coaches
- Spent time in an alcohol and drug addiction treatment center
- Openly lied to his coaches about what he did during the bye week
- Is being investigated by a grand jury for an incident with his former girlfriend
- Reportedly showed up at practice drunk
- Reportedly spent the final week of the season in Las Vegas rather than with team
- Is a below-average quarterback in just about every important measurable at the NFL level
In two years with the Browns since being selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel has made eight starts, compiling a 2-6 record, passed for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions, fumbled seven times and completed just 57 percent of his passes.
It has been a long time coming, but today could finally be the day that the Browns pull down the curtain on the Manziel circus.
