The Cleveland Browns are reportedly hosting Cal quarterback Jared Goff for a workout this week.

It what is probably the least-surprising news imaginable, the Cleveland Browns will reportedly have Cal quarterback Jared Goff in for a workout this week.

Goff is considered the co-leader, along with North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz, to be the first quarterback selected at next month’s NFL Draft and the Browns are widely considered to be the team that will be making the choice between the two.

This past season, Goff completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 4,247 yards, while throwing 37 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions (although five of those interceptions came in the game against Utah.)

More from Dawg Pound Daily

He followed that up by throwing for six touchdowns and 467 yards against Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl, leading Cal to its first bowl game win since 2008. Goff was the first true freshman quarterback in Cal history to start a season opener, and finished his collegiate career completing 977 passes for 12,195 yards and 96 touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 144.

It was the culmination of a journey where Goff led the Bears from a 1-11 record as a freshman to a bowl game win, improving his passing numbers along the way.

Having gone through a rebuilding project at Cal and living to talk about it could set Goff up to succeed in a similar situation in Cleveland, where the Browns are in the early stages of their latest rebuilding plan. Goff dealt directly with that very prospect in a recent interview at Monday Morning Quarterback, where he as asked about the “specter” of being selected by the Browns.

“I’m not worried about it,” Goff said. “I’m excited about it. Whatever team I go to, I’ll be excited to go. I want to be the future of a franchise. I think I can be a guy who can make an impact right away.”

Goff also can make every throw needed in the NFL and under any circumstance, according to Pro Football Focus, easily out-performing some other quarterbacks we’ve seen people try and link to the Browns:

"One of the reasons we like Cal quarterback Jared Goff is his ability to succeed in all circumstances. Whether under pressure, facing the blitz, or throwing to all levels of the field, Goff performed well. A quick look at Goff’s grades compared to the rest of the quarterback draft class shows that he’s consistent across the board, other than the few 40-plus yard bombs on which he struggled."

"When you add it all up for Goff, you have a quarterback that can win at every level, whether in a clean pocket or when facing the blitz."

Even with last week’s signing of Robert Griffin III the Browns could still be looking to draft a quarterback and this week’s workout could help further cement their feelings about whether or not Goff has what it takes to help turn the franchise’s 23-year quest for its next franchise quarterback.
