Cleveland Browns: Top 10 rushing games of all time (Part 2)
By Thomas Moore
When you are talking about the greatest running back that ever was or ever will be in the NFL, it can be difficult to select a singular moment as being the best ever.
But for Jim Brown, the 1963 season may fit the bill.
Brown led the NFL in rushing that season with 1,863 yards, an NFL record that would stand for a decade and is still the 12th-highest total in league history. Brown also averaged a career-best 6.4 yards per carry to lead the NFL and had nine games with 120 or more rushing yards.
Those totals were helped along on a November day in Philadelphia, when Brown rushed for 223 yards and a touchdown as the Browns beat the Eagles, 23-17.
Brown set the tone early by running 62 yards for a touchdown on the game’s fourth play. He would continue to pound the Eagles defense into the Franklin Field turf and finish the day with 1,194 rushing yards on the season – despite it being just the eighth game of the campaign.
As big as the day was for Brown, it still wasn’t the biggest performance of the season by the Hall of Famer.
