The Cleveland Browns signed rookie offensive lineman Shon Coleman Tuesday afternoon and have now signed 11 of the 14 players drafted.

The Cleveland Browns added another draft pick to the roster when Shon Coleman signed his contract Tuesday afternoon.

Coleman is an offensive lineman out of Auburn who was drafted by the Browns in the third round.

His story was one that began tragically when he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in 2010, but turned into a triumph when he beat the disease and played at Auburn, ultimately being drafted by the Browns.

He even spent his draft night at the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital in Memphis, the same one where he was treated, showing the kind of character the new front office is going after when drafting players.

Coleman’s story is inspirational, but he is more than just a great human interest story. The 6-foot-5 Coleman will have a shot at the starting right tackle position, competing with Michael Bowie, Austin Pasztor and Alvin Bailey, who is the front-runner right now.

But it is only June, so the position should remain for the taking as no job is safe when a team undergoes a complete rebuild.

According to OverTheCap.com, Coleman’s contract is worth $3.1 million over four years. Based on the money and the position where he was drafted, Coleman should have a great shot to win the job.

Even if he is on the sidelines to start the season, it would be hard to imagine him not seeing the field, especially since he is one of the team’s draft picks. Bowie and Bailey both began their respective careers with the Seattle Seahawks, while Pastor began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The only thing that may keep Coleman on the sidelines is if the coaches want him to develop a bit more before playing, but that would not be a year-long process for a talented player like Coleman.

Whether he starts the season on the field or the sidelines, the Browns have signed a great human being in Shon Coleman.
