A Cleveland Browns quarterback has only been able to reach a certain passing mark one time in the team’s history.

The Cleveland Browns brought in Robert Griffin III in an attempt to breathe life into an offense that has struggled since 1999.

The list of quarterbacks since that time is comically long, so fans are hoping Griffin can be the starter for more than just a few games in 2016.

He can also make history if he can reach a certain amount of passing touchdowns, which is something brought up by NFL.com writer Marc Sessler.

This stat is frankly hard to believe. The game was never as pass-heavy as it has been in the last two decades, but 30 touchdowns is not something that should be so hard to reach more than once in nearly 70 seasons.

Brian Sipe reached the 30 touchdown mark in the 1980 season that ended with the infamous Red Right 88 debacle. He won the MVP that season, and fans at the time probably thought another 30 touchdown season would happen rather soon.

Well, it’s 2016 and Sipe remains the only Browns quarterback to ever throw for 30 touchdowns. To put that in perspective, Tom Brady has thrown for at least 30 touchdowns six times since 2007, a year in which he finished with 50 touchdowns.

Looking closer at the list shows something even more startling. Derek Anderson is the only Browns quarterback since 1999 to throw for over 20 touchdowns, when he threw for 29 in 2007.

He was able to reach that mark because he started 15 games, which is a rare feat for any Browns quarterback since 1999.

If Griffin wants to break this below-30 streak, he needs to remain healthy for the entire season. The offensive line factors into this equation, but Griffin needs to avoid unnecessary runs that can get him injured.

Reaching 30 touchdowns will not be easy with the amount of rookies being featured in the receiving corps, but the new offense under Hue Jackson should be able to surprise Browns fans in 2016.
