No cause for concern with RGIII…yet

After signing Robert Griffin III this offseason to presumably become the next Cleveland Browns starting quarterback, is it a bad thing he’s not “wowing” at OTA’s?

For anyone who has remotely followed the NFL since 1999, they would know that the Cleveland Browns and quarterbacks have never mixed well. Whether it be a rookie bust or a journeyman veteran on his last legs, 24 have come and 24 have gone in attempts to become a mainstay at the starting spot.

Barring an inhuman showing from Cody Kessler, Robert Griffin III will likely become number 25. According to ESPN Browns writer Pat McManamon, Griffin lacked a “wow” moment in the six OTA sessions that were open to the media, and there was nothing that caused him to “stand up and take notice.”

While this isn’t exactly what you want to hear as a fan hoping to have at least a temporary answer to your team’s quarterback conundrum, it also isn’t the end of the world. As McManamon mentions later in the piece, along with integrating himself into a new offense, Griffin doesn’t have the best group around him to work with. The receiving corps features a lot of youth and inexperience, but also a lot of potential.

This is a part of any rebuild that fans hate going through; the growth and meshing of players that are coming together for the first time. However, once that takes place and that stage is over, you’re left with a signal caller and group of receivers that know each other like the back of their hand.

There is still plenty of time before anything starts mattering for real. Training camp is coming up next month, followed by preseason play and finally the regular season.

Hue Jackson has shown that he can do some rather impressive things with quarterbacks, and he still has faith in him and wants to help Griffin revert to the type of production he had his rookie season. So Browns fans, please resist the urge – and I am guilty of this as well – to overreact and think RGIII is going to be a dumpster fire this season, before seeing him in any situations that really matter.
