Daily Dawg Tags: RG3 cannot afford early struggles
Spanning the virtual globe to bring you the latest news about the Cleveland Browns and the NFL – these are your Daily Dawg Tags for Wednesday, June 29.
The Cleveland Browns open training camp one month from today and it could not come soon enough. The speculation regarding the team’s performance in 2016 continues to rage on, so it will be nice to actually see some on-field action to gauge the team’s talent.
While we wait, there are still topics being covered that range from current to former players. Robert Griffin III’s job security and the tragic death of Don Rogers nearly 30 years ago highlight the coverage from Tuesday.
Let’s take a look at the news surrounding the Browns and the rest of the NFL.
Cleveland Browns:
Cleveland Browns: RG3 must impress early in 2016
"The Cleveland Browns are not trying to hide the fact the organization is in a rebuilding phase. By drafting 14 players, and already signing 13 of them, the Browns are looking for new faces to be a part of this franchise as the trend of losing looks to be reversed. Robert Griffin III is one of these new faces and he occupies the most heavily scrutinized position in all of Cleveland sports."
Cleveland Browns: Remembering Don Rogers
"The Cleveland Browns had a clear plan for building their defense in the mid-1980s and headed into the 1984 NFL Draft looking for the final piece to the puzzle. The Browns had selected Hanford Dixon and Eddie Johnson in 1981 and Chip Banksin 1982. With the downfall of the USFL, Frank Minnifield joined the squad in 1984 and Mike Johnson followed in 1986."
Cleveland Browns: E.J. Bibbs is clearly the second tight end (Factory of Sadness)
"The Cleveland Browns need more play-makers than tight end Gary Barnidge, running back Duke Johnson, and wide receiver Corey Coleman. Yes, there are others who could contribute(mainly rookie wide receivers), but a player who is underrated that deserves more hype is E.J. Bibbs."
Are the Cleveland Browns losing fans? (NFL Spin Zone)
"We are one week removed from the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the National Basketball Association title, and fans in northeast Ohio are just now coming back down to earth. Instances of random strangers offering high fives are decreasing. Re-living Cleveland’s victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals has been replaced by looking forward to offseason moves the Cavs may make, following the Cleveland Indians and wondering what will be for the 2016 Cleveland Browns."
Dominique Alexander making most of Browns opportunity (clevelandbrowns.com)
"Dominique Alexander was thrown into the fire almost as soon as he got settled into his dorm room at Oklahoma. The linebacker left Norman as a two-time All-Big 12 selection, a three-year starter and one of the most productive Sooners in recent memory. Now, Alexander — who joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent this past spring after a collegiate career that saw him total 290 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, three pass breakups and an interception — finds himself trying to recreate that success in Cleveland."
NFL News:
Seahawks sign Doug Baldwin to contract extension (FanSided)
"Doug Baldwin has emerged to become the top receiver for the Seattle Seahawks over the past five seasons. The Seahawks signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2011 NFL Draft. Baldwin has racked up over 3,800 yards and 29 touchdowns during this time, including his first 1,000-yard season in 2015 and has also been on two teams that made the Super Bowl."
Former Colts RB Zurlon Tipton dies after freak accident (NFL Mocks)
"Former Indianapolis Colts undrafted free agent Zurlon Tipton passed away Tuesday morning after suffering an accidental gunshot wound to his abdomen. According to local reports, Tipton was unloading a duffel bag from his car at a dealership when a firearm accidentally discharged inside the bag."
Former NFL coach Buddy Ryan dies at age 85 (NFL.com)
"Buddy Ryan, the architect of perhaps the greatest defense in NFL history, a doting father to a pair of current-day coaches who carry on his blustery style and legendary curmudgeon beloved by multiple fan bases passed away on Tuesday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer, his agent confirmed to NFL Media."
