The RG3 elevator speech is about to get a lot harder

The Cleveland Browns named Robert Griffin III the starting quarterback for the 2016 season Monday afternoon.

Given my daily wardrobe, I’m probably the most recognizable Cleveland Browns fan living in Washington DC, so I can never avoid “The Question”.  In the grocery line, the gym, the dentist’s office with my mouth pried open.

“So what do you think about RG3?”

All off-season I dodged and politically pivoted with a quick elevator speech: “Hey, the jury’s out, he came at no-cost, and I’m not even sure he’s gonna’ start. I love the rookie.”

What do I say now that RG3 has been named the starter? Like so many feel about this year’s election, there may not be a good answer. I’m considering…

  • “He’s only 26, won the Heisman and he did lead the Redskins to an amazing rookie season,” or
  • “Hue Jackson’s just using the preseason to see what he’s got. Long ways to September 11,” or
  • “According to what’s been reported, he’s back on track.”

I just wish I actually believed any of those rationalizations.

Until proven otherwise, I still believe “RGme” — although an accomplished and intelligent highly talented athlete — hasn’t demonstrated the mechanics, commitment or “that Brady/Montana” will-to-win needed to succeed as an NFL franchise quarterback. A faster, marginally more accurate Tim Tebow  — without the cult following.

But in August, for this version of the 2016 Browns (and until we wring the best deal for McCown when another team’s starter goes down), he’s the best alternative.

Next: Browns name RG3 starting QB

That’s my elevator speech — at least for this week until Green Bay Friday night.
