Cleveland Browns: Training Camp Day 10 recap
The Cleveland Browns continue to come together in preparation for the preseason opener Friday night.
With the first preseason game just three days away, the Cleveland Browns are in preparation mode for their game against the Green Bay Packers Friday. Tuesday’s practice was the second-to-last training camp session in Berea before the game, and it was a fundamentally sound, clean practice.
While there weren’t many highlights from the practice itself, excitement for the opportunity to compete against a different team is mounting after the Browns released their first unofficial depth chart Monday night in the wake of Robert Griffin III being named the starting quarterback.
Even though he was pleased with how hard his team worked today, head coach Hue Jackson appears to be preoccupied with looking ahead to Friday night.
“I’m just excited about watching all these guys do it on Friday, you know, it’s been great out here, but now we need to take it to the next level and go do it on the field against a different opponent and that’ll be fun,” Jackson told the media.
On a hot and humid afternoon in Berea, the roster is beginning to take shape, as the team has a better idea of who is playing where on Friday. Although no cuts have been made as the roster remains large at 90, the team seems to be more organized entering their first preseason game.
For example, the offensive line is coming together despite a lot of possible starting combinations. It now appears that second-year player Cameron Erving will start at center, creating a feeling of more certainty among the unit.
With Joe Thomas and John Greco assumed to be starters, two positions remain open. The most competitive remains uncertain, as the right tackle competition is still a four-way contest between Alvin Bailey, Austin Pasztor, Shon Coleman, and Spencer Drango. This however, may drag on past the first preseason game.
The other often overlooked competition on the roster is at the nickel cornerback position, a role that K’Waun Williams was expected to fill. Not that Williams has had a poor training camp, but Jamar Taylor has come out of nowhere and will be considered seriously for a starting spot. Both players are expected to make the roster regardless, but the coaching staff still must evaluate each player and make this critical decision to benefit a young Cleveland secondary.

With the team coming together, it is an exciting time for everyone involved, and it is often the case that players will relax a little, knowing that they have made it through the most difficult stretch.
This isn’t the case however, with Terrelle Pryor. Despite the receiver’s remarkable rise to a starting position on the first depth chart, Pryor is still working hard to improve, as coach Jackson expects.
Most of all, the excitement in Berea this season is unlike any other season at this point. The Browns are truly eager to play somebody other than themselves. This energy comes mostly from the coaching staff, and is led especially by Jackson who genuinely enjoys working hard and bringing optimism to Cleveland. Still, the players’ excitement isn’t manufactured, as they too are anxious to put their hard work to the test.
The team will continue their preparation for the game against the Packers Wednesday afternoon in their final training camp practice, beginning at 3:15 p.m. They will travel to Green Bay on Thursday, and play the Packers Friday night, as opening kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
