Browns vs Packers: Preseason Week 1 Offensive Takeaways
By Joel W. Cade
The Cleveland Browns opened the preseason with a loss to the Green Bay Packers. Here are 5 takeaways on the play of the offense.
The Cleveland Browns offense played like it was in rebuilding mode against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night at Lambeau Field. In their first preseason game, the Browns showed glimpses of what could be, along with the realities that come with a new head coach and offensive scheme combined with a young roster.
There were a few exciting plays on offense:
- The Browns opened with a 49-yard completion to Terrelle Pryor on their first offensive play of the game. Pryor, who is much improved from last season, looked like a playmaker at the wide receiver position. If he comes on strong, the wide receiver room could be great.
- Rookie quarterback Cody Kessler made a fantastic throw in the red zone to Rashard Higgins for the Browns only touchdown on the evening. (A touchdown pass from Josh McCown to Connor Hamlett was negated by a penalty.)
- Duke Johnson ran with more power than he displayed last season, breaking two tackles and applying a vicious stiff arm to end one run.
There were lows as well, of course:
- It will be hard to forget Kessler running out of the back of the end zone, or hanging on to the ball on too long resulting in two sacks.
- Austin Davis hopefully learned a lesson in sliding. His attempt to make something out of nothing landed him in the locker room with concussion-like symptoms.
Let’s take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the Browns offense from Friday night.
