Connor Shaw, 2014

The highest ranking single-start quarterback on this list comes in the form of Connor Shaw. The former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback was one of the better in school history, as coach Steve Spurrier even compared Shaw to Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. Spurrier was also a very vocal supporter of Shaw during his time in Cleveland.

But even though Shaw spent two full seasons in Cleveland, the young quarterback only got the opportunity to start a single game. Injuries derailed his career, highlighted by a torn ligament in his thumb in a preseason game against the Redskins in 2015. The injury required surgery, and signaled the end of Shaw’s tenure in Cleveland.

What Shaw did do though was impress in his one start. It was Week 17 in Baltimore, and the Browns were seeking their first non-losing record in seven seasons.

While he didn’t provide an explosive offensive spark, the young Connor Shaw gave Browns fans hope with a tough performance against a division rival. The 22nd starting quarterback in Browns history played through pain and impressed the Browns enough to take a further look at him the following season.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned surgery ended Shaw’s 2015 season, and therefore his time in Cleveland. On June 30 of this year, Shaw announced his release through Twitter, and was quickly claimed by the Chicago Bears.
