Cleveland Browns should not draft any quarterback at No. 1 overall

The Cleveland Browns will be seeing a lot of quarterback talent at the NFL Combine, and may decide to select one in the first round in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Based on what the so-called experts are saying, it seems like the Cleveland Browns have an easy choice with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Take Myles Garrett and go from there.

But this is the Browns, so the easy choice is never the one that is ultimately made.

The Browns desperately need a franchise quarterback if the team is ever going to improve, and there are several different routes the team can go. One of those is drafting a guy in 2017, although it may be a reach to do so with the No. 1 overall pick. But once again, we are talking about the Browns.

Mary Kay Cabot is going off unnamed sources, so it is possible that “strongly considering” could just mean someone heard the Browns had interest in Mitch Trubisky. This is no secret, and it is hard to say they are considering taking him No. 1 overall unless someone directly got this from Sashi Brown.

The NFL Combine also sees rumors leaked out regarding certain players, and this year is no different. But the news may still alarm some Browns fans, who believe the team must be built around the quarterback position before bringing in a rookie and expecting him to fix all the problems.

This does not just mean avoiding Trubisky at No. 1 overall, but it means not taking any quarterback at that slot, instead allowing the team to take a dominant defensive player who could help shore up a unit that has struggled to form any kind of resistance for years.

If Trubisky, or even Deshaun Watson or DeShone Kizer are available at No. 12, then the Browns could take a chance on one of the players. But none of them should be taken No. 1 overall when Garrett remains the clear top talent in the draft.

For now, the Browns would be better off trading a second or third-round pick for someone like A.J. McCarron, thus allowing the early draft picks to focus on the other positions in need of improvement.

Having a hometown hero like Trubisky come to town to help the Browns would be great, but not with the No. 1 overall pick. It is nothing against him personally or his skills as a quarterback, but it would be hard for him to succeed without the rest of the team being improved around him with some top talent. If he is there at No. 12, take him. But for now, Garrett should still be at the top of the Browns’ draft board.
