Daily Dawg Tags: Browns will always be linked to quarterbacks
By Thomas Moore
The Cleveland Browns will continue to be linked to every available quarterback under the sun until the team finally solves the lingering problem.
By now, we should all be familiar with the following script.
A quarterback is in or near free agency, or a team “must” trade a quarterback, so, of course, the Cleveland Browns will be an eager and willing partner.
After all the Browns need a quarterback and have the cap space to pour a large sum of money into a new contract.

New England Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo? Sure, the Browns would love to give the Patriots a couple of first round draft picks for him.
Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins? The Browns would be eager to take on his $23.94 million contract for a year and then watch him sign with the San Francisco 49ers!
A broken-down Geno Smith, last seen throwing a pass for the New York Jets in October? Come on in, plenty of empty seats in the quarterback room.
There is one way to fix all this: the Browns could finally solve the quarterback problem that has plagued the franchise since the early 1990s.
Until then, the rumor mill will continue to roll along when it comes to the Browns and quarterbacks.
Cleveland Browns news:
Browns have nothing to gain by giving Geno Smith a chance
The Cleveland Browns reportedly have interest in Geno Smith, but bringing him to Cleveland would not serve as an upgrade at the quarterback position.
Browns claim WR James Wright off waivers
The Cleveland Browns added wide receiver James Wright off waivers on Tuesday, a player familiar to head coach Hue Jackson from their time in Cincinnati.
RG3 was never going to make it with the Browns
The Cleveland Browns gave Robert Griffin III a chance to turn his career around, but it was clear that he wasn’t going to repeat his past success.
Browns QB battle may be Cody Kessler vs. a rookie (ESPN)
"The Cleveland Browns traded for a quarterback early in free agency so they could pay him and not play him. Such is the state of the position in Cleveland; the Browns will pay Brock Osweiler $16 million not to play. Cue the jokes about what it would take to get someone to actually, you know, take the field. The initial free-agent spending splurge has come and gone, and the Browns added talent on the offensive line but released one of their quarterbacks. The Browns’ options, never that great to start, dwindled as free agency continued."
Browns not expected to make a run at Kirk Cousins (cleveland.com)
"The Browns aren’t expected to make a run at Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, but three other teams have over the past 10 days or so and were immediately turned down, a league source told cleveland.com."
NFL news:
Terrelle Pryor needs to have a big year in Washington (PFT)
"Washington receiver Terrelle Pryor opted for a one-year, $6 million deal with up to $2 million tied to incentives. To get the full $2 million, he needs to have a pretty big year."
Kirk Cousins said he never demanded a trade (CBS Sports)
"Kirk Cousins signed his franchise tender last week, which means the Redskins will pay him $24 million in 2017. This assumes, of course, that Cousins isn’t traded, a possibility that’s been mentioned countless times in recent weeks — partly because he’s reportedly unhappy with the organization. In fact, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Cousins asked Redskins owner Daniel Snyder for a trade but “was basically told not to get his hopes up.” This comes as news to Cousins, who admitted to reaching out to Snyder, but not to ask for a trade."
Worst free agent contracts of 2017 (NFL.com)
"NFL teams are getting smarter. An overstuffed first week of free agency included everything but teams clearly doing it wrong. Even the dodgy contracts in this market limited guarantees to the first two years, for the most part. That trend makes it a little harder to complete the “worst contracts” part of this exercise evaluating the best and worst deals from agency, but it’s far from impossible. Below are the nine most questionable deals — from the teams’ perspective, that is — thus far."
Eddie Lacy to Seattle, but offensive line still a question (PFF)
"The Seahawks signed Green Bay’s Eddie Lacy to play running back. Analyst Mike Renner says the team still needs to upgrade its line."
