Daily Dawg Tags: Browns QB conundrum rolls along
By Thomas Moore
The Cleveland Browns continue to face a conundrum at the quarterback position, and all the available cures have something lacking.
Can the Cleveland Browns actually find a trade partner for quarterback Brock Osweiler?
Will – or better, should – the Browns try to make a deal for disgruntled quarterback Kirk Cousins, even though he is expected to bolt to the loving arms of Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco the first chance he gets?
Those are just some of the questions facing the team, and we haven’t even gone into the quarterbacks available in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Just about every option at the moment has its downside, which is why the Browns should tread lightly as they try to fix the problem.
Simply throwing money at a player or, worse yet, multiple high draft picks in the hope that that will solve the problem is foolish and not something this regime seems interested in doing.
Maybe, before they do anything, the Browns should take a look at the recent career trajectory of Osweiler, who was the “hot” free agent quarterback a year ago. Now? He’s on the Browns roster, but probably not for long.
We cover those topics, and more, in today’s edition of the Daily Dawg Tags.
Cleveland Browns news:
Can the Browns really get something for Brock Osweiler?
The Cleveland Browns have reportedly been shopping Brock Osweiler since he was acquired, but it is hard to believe any team will spend much to get him.
Something doesn’t sound right about the Kirk Cousin rumors
The Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in making a trade for Kirk Cousins, although the news is a bit hard to believe.
Post-free agent mock draft roundup
The Cleveland Browns own 11 picks in the 2017 NFL Draft. While the top pick seems like a lock, what will the team do with their second first-round selection?
Todd McShay delves into Browns quarterback draft decision (ohio.com)
"With the first wave of NFL free agency complete, the latest trend among draft analysts is to predict all of the incoming rookie quarterbacks who will be available to the Browns when they go on the clock at No. 12 overall. ESPN’s Todd McShay is among the experts forecasting the Browns’ dream scenario."
Terrelle Pryor dropped the ball on contract talks (cleveland.com)
"Some fans want to blame the Browns for failing to sign Terrelle Pryor. You can do that if you are convinced Pyror was worth being paid as one of the top receivers in the NFL. But is that fair? I don’t think so."
NFL news:
Eagles seem to be forgetting about defense (philly.com)
"One lesson we learned from the Donovan McNabb Era was that a quarterback’s career can look a lot shorter in the rearview than it did at the start. Perhaps we saw traces of that realization last week, when the Eagles addressed their dismal fleet of pass-catchers with an aggressiveness they rarely displayed during McNabb’s early years under center. Question is, can the Eagles prioritize the individual development of their quarterback without jeopardizing the collective strength of their roster?"
Brock Osweiler disaster a lesson for all NFL teams (Sporting News)
"A year ago, Brock Osweiler was in high demand during NFL free agency despite only seven career starts. The quarterback rejected a starting position with the Super Bowl-champion Broncos to sign a four-year, $72 million contract ($37 million guaranteed) with the Texans. What a difference a year makes for the NFL’s Underachiever of the Year."
Perhaps the 49ers are not Baalke vs. Lynch, but old Jed vs. new Jed (CSN Bay Area)
"John Lynch has already established his hyperactivity bonafides, which is what fans want from their general managers. They want action, and Lynch has force-fed them all the action that can be rammed down a human gullet. Now comes the other shoe – what it all means to the way the San Francisco 49ers view their place in the world."
10 players set to benefit the most from free agency (PFF)
"Typically, the first day or two of free agency in the NFL is one of the most exciting times during the offseason each year. For some, re-signing to stay on board with the team that originally drafted them is the desired route, but for others, a change of scenery (and millions of more dollars) is too hard to pass up. When a player changes teams via free agency, the move not only directly impacts his own play on the field, but also the play of others around him. With this in mind, let’s take a look at 10 players who are set to benefit from the moves of free agency thus far in 2017."
