Browns sign former CFL kicker Brett Maher

The Cleveland Browns made a minor roster move on Monday, signing former Canadian Football League kicker Brett Maher.
The Cleveland Browns added some competition in the kicking game on Monday as the team has signed placekicker Brett Maher.
The team announced the move on its website.
Maher spent the past three seasons in the Canadian Football League, most recently with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where he converted 41-of-50 field goals. In three years in the CFL, he made 66-of-87 field goals, a conversion rate of 75.9 percent.
Maher was originally signed as a free agent by the New York Jets in 2013 out of Nebraska. He spent time with the Jets and the Dallas Cowboys, never appearing in a regular season game, before heading off to Canada.
He played two seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks, kicking the game-winner in a Week 4 game in 2014 to the Redblacks their first league win, according to 3DownNation. A torn labrum in his kicking hip forced him to miss all but four games with Ottawa in the 2015 season.
Maher won the kicking job in Hamilton after beating out four other kickers.

If he makes it to training camp, Maher will compete with Cody Parkey for the placekicking job. Parkey had a rough start in 2016 – missing three kicks in the Browns loss to the Miami Dolphins – but finished the year converting 20-of-25 field goals and 20-of-21 extra points.
