The Cleveland Browns are focusing on the upcoming season and avoiding distractions by getting the draft picks signed to deals.
The Cleveland Browns are known as a franchise often surrounded in more off-the-field controversy than success on the field.
But the current front office is looking to change the usual narrative.
The 2017 offseason has been filled with positive news, with the only real negative being not signing Terrelle Pryor. But whether that is truly a bad move or not is yet to be seen.
The good news continues each time one of the team’s 10 draft picks signs a deal, as seven have already signed contracts with the team. The most important one was signed a few days ago, when Myles Garrett signed his deal to the tune of Seal.
So Myles Garrett is the coolest guy ever, but that’s a story for another time.
Caleb Brantley was also signed over the weekend, and looks to be a valuable part of the team now that the battery complaint against him has been dropped.
The three yet to be signed are Jabrill Peppers, David Njoku and DeShone Kizer, but at the current rate of picks being signed, it would be shocking if any of the three remain unsigned at the end of this week.
The Browns are clearly committed to focusing on the on-field product in 2017, avoiding any distractions that may come in meeting rooms or on the phone with agents. And the fact the unsigned rookies have taken part in workouts and are visible in the city already is a good sign.
Fans won’t be completely satisfied until all 10 picks are signed, but the fact the team has moved so swiftly and it is not even June is a nice return to normalcy. Just getting through an offseason without a major off-the-field story or scandal is what fans want, and that has held true in 2017
Josh Gordon‘s situation may qualify as the only story under that category, but he was never really relied upon to be a contributing member to this team. Some may have hoped he would turn it around and get reinstated, but that seems to be wishful thinking at this point.
So Gordon aside, the offseason has been filled with less distraction and more progress on making the team a contender once again. The final step is to sign the three remaining draft picks, but that news should be coming out much sooner than later.
