The Cleveland Browns and Brock Osweiler were a weird pairing to begin with, although it was never expected to last this long.

Cleveland Browns fans know the Brock Osweiler story by now. When he was traded to the Browns, the move was applauded for the draft capital it brought to Cleveland. Osweiler’s name was just an afterthought.

Many fans believed Osweiler would immediately be traded or cut, yet he is on the field today with the Browns during OTAs.

Seeing Osweiler in a Browns uniform is an odd sight for fans of any NFL team. The move was made to get his contract off the Houston Texans’ books, while it benefitted the Browns as the team acquired more draft picks.

But when looking into his situation, it may make more sense to keep him on the roster throughout the season.

For one, the Browns are already paying Osweiler $16 million this season, and he isn’t even expected to be the starter. The team can get rid of him after this season with no money owed, which will likely be the case given his base salary is $18 million in 2018.

So barring any contract restructuring, this appears to be a one-year pairing.

That leaves Osweiler as the highest-paid quarterback on the roster, along with the one who has the most experience. For Hue Jackson, Osweiler serves as an asset for his young quarterbacks. Even though Osweiler has struggled in big moments, he still has playoff experience and was on a Super Bowl winning team.

So even if Jackson has no intention of starting Osweiler in 2017, it is not a lost season for the former Texan. He can stay healthy while also collecting an insane amount of money. Learning a new offense will also help him further himself as an NFL quarterback.

Because once this season is over, the Browns will likely be getting rid of Osweiler. And even though he may not prove anything this year, teams are desperate for quarterbacks. Just look at all the money Mike Glennon got from the Bears, or even the money Osweiler got from the Texans last season.

Short memories sometimes prevail and teams think a player deserves another shot. The Browns aren’t that team for Osweiler, but someone will surely gain some interest in him after the season.

For now, he is the Browns’ backup quarterback and one of the highest-paid men in the NFL. It is weird, but so it goes in the weird world of sports and the Cleveland Browns.
