The Cleveland Browns will feature Brock Osweiler in the starting quarterback role Thursday night, but DeShone Kizer is not out of the starting race yet.

Those Cleveland Browns fans who have sworn oaths of fealty to DeShone Kizer were surely disheartened this week when it was announced Brock Osweiler will be starting Thursday’s preseason opener.

While this is a good sign for Osweiler’s chances to start the regular season opener as well, this one game is by no means a clear declaration that the position is settled.

Kizer, along with Cody Kessler, will receive some significant playing time Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints. While it would be nice for this team to have a sure starter and play him sparingly throughout the preseason like most other teams do, this current situation does allow Hue Jackson to see what his young quarterbacks can do.

When specifically talking about Kizer, Jackson can get a gauge of whether the rookie quarterback is better than his lackluster record at Notre Dame seems to indicate. It would be nice if Kizer showed enough in camp to give his coach a clear sense of his abilities, but live game action is ultimately the best test of one’s abilities as a quarterback.

Kizer being one of the backups Thursday night may serve him better in the long-term, and the extended playing time could lead to the rookie getting some starts during the regular season.

We take a look at that and more in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.
