Cleveland Browns: Brock Osweiler’s odd time in Cleveland
The Cleveland Browns made a splash in free agency by signing Kevin Zeitler to a major deal to help shore up the offensive line. But the most notable move came when the trade was made to acquire Osweiler, along with a second-round pick.
The trade had analysts baffled and Browns fans immediately assuming he would be traded. And yes, it did appear trading him was the ultimate goal. But another team has to want the player for a trade to go through.
Houston essentially got bailed out by the Browns, who had the cap space to make the deal. Looking back, the second-round pick may not be worth that $16 million.
Regardless, Osweiler came to town and wasn’t heard from, while the front office also remained quiet on his arrival. Every day that passed became another in which he wasn’t traded, leading fans to wonder if he would indeed be competing for the starting job.
Naming Cody Kessler the starter and drafting DeShone Kizer added some intrigue to the impending competition, but it was clear Osweiler had a great chance to win the job. This is when the doom started to set in.
There was nothing more fascinating than seeing Browns fans rationalize Osweiler as the best option for the team in 2017.
