The Cleveland Browns received some bad news on Monday as wide receiver Corey Coleman has reportedly suffered a broken hand.

Cleveland Browns fans should file this one under the heading of “news that surprises absolutely no one.”

For the second consecutive season, wide receiver Corey Coleman has suffered a broken hand, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson:

Coleman was injured early in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens when he tried to catch a high throw from quarterback DeShone Kizer. Coleman was hit on the throw by Baltimore cornerback Marlon Humphrey and left the game holding his right hand, the same one he broke last season during practice.

Coleman was reportedly planning to visit a hand specialist on Monday, according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, after having his hand X-rayed following Sunday’s game.

Last season his broken hand forced Coleman to miss six weeks and came after his best game as a pro, catching five passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns against the Ravens. While he did not require surgery for that break, Coleman still missed enough time that he wasn’t the same wide receiver once he returned. (Of course, having Robert Griffin III as his quarterback didn’t help, either.)

Two weeks into the season and the Browns are dealing with the same type of injuries that strike every team across the league, but somehow this one will be magnified to be worse, in part because it is the second time Coleman has broken a hand, and because it is the Browns, and because the wide receiver position has been a focal point of negativity since the start of training camp.

The wide receivers, outside of Rashard Higgins, did not have the best of days against the Ravens, as Coleman, Ricardo Louis and Kenny Britt combined for just four receptions 38 yards. Britt, who has been vilified from the moment he arrived in town because he is not Terrelle Pryor, and Coates, who gave several examples on Sunday of why the Pittsburgh Steelers gave up on him, are Public Enemies No. 1 and 1A around Browns Town today.

Of course, the wide receivers of the Cincinnati Bengals not named A.J. Green only had three receptions for 24 yards the week before against Baltimore, but this is not about pointing out that the Ravens secondary is pretty good, but rather about how the Browns are doomed.

Coleman’s injury is far from ideal, but there can be a positive in this. Higgins clearly earned more playing time on Sunday, and with Coleman injured, and Britt and Coates struggling, there will be more playing time for wide receivers Kasen Williams and Louis to get on the field.

The lack of options in the passing game may even help head coach Hue Jackson remember that the strength of the offense is supposed to be the offensive line and running game, and that it might not be a bad idea to utilize them to support your rookie quarterback.

It is only two weeks into the season so, for now, let’s go with the positive take as we’re sure there will be plenty of time for negativity in the weeks to come.
