The Cleveland Browns added another player to the futures list, inking former second-round pick Gavin Escobar to a deal on Monday.

Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey made another investment in the future on Monday by signing tight end Gavin Escobar to the team’s reserve/futures list.

The Browns announced the move on the team’s official website.

It is a reunion of sorts as Dorsey signed Escobar last March when Dorsey was general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. Dorsey was fired over the summer by the Chiefs, however, and Escobar did not make the Chiefs final roster out of training camp as the Chiefs decided to go with Demetrius Harris and Ross Travis as the backups to Travis Kelce.

Escobar did appear in two games in 2017, however, with the Baltimore Ravens but did not record any stats.

Escobar, who is 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, was originally a second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the Cowboys, playing in 64 games and logging 30 catches for 333 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season was 2014, when he turned his nine receptions into four touchdowns.

While he did not see the field much on offense, Escobar put in a lot of time on special teams for the Cowboys.

And for an NFL player, Escobar is not even the most famous alumni of his high school, Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. According to chiefs.com, some of the more notable alumni from the school include quarterback Carson Palmer, who retired following the 2017 NFL season after a 14-year career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals; Klay Thompson, a current member of the Golden State Warriors in the NBA; and Kristin Cavallari, a former reality star and current wife of free agent quarterback Jay Cutler.

As for how Escobar fits in with the Browns, one of the areas that kept him off the field in Dallas, besides playing behind tight end Jason Witten, was that Escobar’s blocking was not up to task.

With David Njoku and Seth DeValve as the Browns pass-catching tight ends, and Randall Tefler handling the blocking tight end role, Escobar may have to break out his special teams skills if he wants to find a spot on the Browns roster this fall.
