Browns Senior Bowl watch: Wide receiver Jaleel Scott
The Cleveland Browns need help at wide receiver, and with some work New Mexico State’s Jaleel Scott could be the receiving threat that the team needs.
The Cleveland Browns wide receiver group has been slightly underwhelming at best, and a bit of a disaster at worst, for the past two seasons.
Corey Coleman has dealt with injuries each of his two years in the league, Josh Gordon is still an enigma, and the Browns lack a consistent top receiving threat.
Two of Cleveland’s three divisional rivals have a game-breaking receiver; the Cincinnati Bengals with the explosive A.J. Green and the Pittsburgh Steelers with their resident game-breaker, Antonio Brown. The Browns need someone to compete.
Jaleel Scott, a wide receiver from New Mexico State and current Senior Bowl participant, could be that someone. Let’s lay down the facts on Scott.

For starters, seniorbowl.com has officially measured Scott at 6-foot-4 and 7/8 inches. In cleats, Scott could measure closer to about 6-foot-6. Only weighing 215 pounds, though, Scott might need to put on some muscle for the next level, which should not be too hard for his frame.
Currently, walterfootball.com ranks Scott as the 16th-best receiver in this class, and mocks him as a third- to fifth-round pick. However, Scott could greatly improve his stock with a solid performance this week at the Senior Bowl.
Scott only played two seasons for the Lobos, but finished the 2017 season with 76 receptions for 1,079 yards and nine touchdowns.
Scott’s greatest advantage over the other mid-round receivers is that he has everything that you cannot coach. Incredible size, a wide catching radius and, because of his size, nearly every physical skill.
What Scott lacks is the absolute burner speed that NFL scouts desire. His projected 40-yard dash time currently stands at around 4.62 (courtesy of nfldraftscout.com).
While his route-running is not ideal, Scott’s ability to high point the ball is uncanny. His body control is second to none in this class, especially in the red zone, which can result in insane catches like this one:
Scott’s speed and route-running are lacking, but he has no other real holes in his receiving game. Especially for a nearly 6-foot-5 receiver from a relatively small school, Scott is a very polished prospect.

Even though Scott’s routes lack polish, he can still run the entire route tree. With a little development from an NFL wide receiver coach, Scott could become an absolute monster. A monster that Cleveland’s offense needs to become truly explosive.
