Mel Kiper, Jr. is a well respected ESPN draft analyst, but is he off base saying Josh Allen should be the Cleveland Browns pick at No. 1 overall?

With the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns have been the greatest topic for the talking heads that discuss the league. Countless people have given their input on what the team should do with the No. 1 overall pick.

While everyone seems to agree the team needs to draft a quarterback, not everyone agrees on which quarterback that should be.

Some believe USC’s Sam Darnold is the choice, while others are on the Baker Mayfield train as they believe the Oklahoma quarterback is the next big thing in the NFL.

Then there’s Mel Kiper, Jr. who believes Josh Allen is the guys. In his most recent mock, Kiper had Allen going there and said the following according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com:

"“He’s got the best arm of anyone in this draft, he has tremendous size, he has tremendous athleticism for a big man. You saw his mobility. You go back to that Iowa game earlier in the year. You go look at the Senior Bowl, in that first half, that second quarter, his mobility there. He’s just got all the physical traits you want. Athletic-prowess, he’s got the will to learn, he’s got great competitive desire on the football field, (Wyoming coach) Craig Bohl raves about him.” — Kiper said via Cabot"

Kiper is a well respected draft analyst, but it’s not easy to see why. His mistakes are well documented and include such things as sayning Ryan Leaf’s poor attitude was good for a team, proclaiming Jimmy Clausen and Andre Ware star quarterbacks and even saying Detroit Lions wide receiver bust Mike Williams would be a Hall of Fame player.

Still, ESPN keeps rolling him out year after year and he says foolish things. Claiming Allen is the best quarterback in the class may take the cake.

Not only did Allen not come close to the production of Mayfield, Darnold or even UCLA’s Josh Rosen, but he also failed to match their stats while playing against lesser talent.

Next: Where the Cleveland Browns must improve the most in 2018

While Allen can wow with his incredible arm, he makes way too many mistakes as is more raw than any of the other options. Sadly, this has a better chance of being another blunder of Kiper’s, rather than a correct prediction.
