The Cleveland Browns will intensify their quest for a quarterback as they have scheduled a private workout and visit with Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.

The Cleveland Browns will meet with Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield as the team continues to works its way toward selecting a quarterback with the No. 1 overall selection of the 2018 NFL Draft.

In addition to the Browns, Mayfield will visit with the New York Giants, owners of the No. 2 overall selection, and the New York Jets, who hold the No. 6 overall selection.

Cleveland will also travel to Norman, Okla., to hold a private workout with Mayfield at some point at the University of Oklahoma.

The news was reported by Robert Klemko in the latest of his series of articles with Mayfield.

Klemko has been following Mayfield through out the pre-draft process and, in addition to the news about the visits, Klemko drops some interesting tidbits from last week’s annual Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The first highlighted Mayfield’s continued understanding of the interview portion of the process, which while not quite as important as the on-field work, still carries a level of importance. Mayfield said he took a proactive approach to questions about anything relating to his off-the-field activities and shot down one of the laziest narratives about him:

"“You only have 15 minutes and certain teams want to talk about the off-field stuff for eight minutes, and frankly that stuff can be addressed pretty quickly You sit down eye to eye, man to man, it’s pretty easy to see that I’m not Johnny [Manziel], I’m not gonna lose my head, and that I love the game of football.”"

The second takeaway is that some teams, sadly unnamed, wanted to know more about the offense that Mayfield ran at Oklahoma since several of those offensive concepts continue to migrate to the NFL:

"“Some teams are just analyzing our offense. You look at Philadelphia running RPOs, and what (Sean) McVay is doing with the Rams. Some of what we did is the next step for the NFL. They have to adapt to the players and that’s what it’s all about. It’s not old-school football anymore. You’ve got to play to your players’ talents.”"

If Mayfield gave that answer while meeting with the Browns it is not difficult to imagine general manager John Dorsey turning to head coach Hue Jackson and saying, “are you paying attention?”

Mayfield remains an enticing prospect as the Browns consider what they are going to do come draft weekend. If they are investing this much time in him, it would be safe to assume Mayfield is in the mix for the No. 1 overall selection.

Dorsey will obviously look at the other quarterbacks as well, and we can all expect reports to come out about meetings in the coming weeks with USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and the rest.

Next: Joe Thomas remains ever optimistic

The draft is just 49 days away, which means that Dorsey and the rest of the Browns braintrust are going to have a lot of late nights on the schedule in the coming weeks.
