The Cleveland Browns were in attendance on Wednesday for Sam Darnold’s Pro Day, and Browns Twitter reacted accordingly.

The Cleveland Browns are once again in the market for a quarterback, which, for once, is not a bad spot to be in as they possess the No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

So it is no surprise that everyone who is anyone within the franchise was on hand Wednesday at USC’s Pro Day to watch quarterback Sam Darnold, who is in consideration for that top pick.

Darnold went through his scripted throws under the watchful eyes of general manager John Dorsey, head coach Hue Jackson, offensive coordinator Todd Haley, quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese and – gasp! – owner Jimmy Haslam.

The Browns were not the only NFL team represented at the event, of course, and most notably representatives from the New York Giants, who have the No. 2 overall selection, and the New York Jets, selecting at No. 3, were also in attendance.

Unlike two years ago, when then offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton had to squirt water on the footballs during quarterback Jared Goff’s Pro Day to see how Goff dealt with adversity, Darnold had to deal with actual rain while going through his workout.

Darnold was the only one of the top quarterbacks who did not throw at the annual Scouting Combine in February, so Wednesday was a chance for teams to get another look at his elongated delivery, talk with Darnold about his 22 turnovers in 2017, and turn a critical eye toward his footwork and mechanics.

Naturally, Darnold was pleased with the results of the controlled workout:

Browns Twitter was its normal mix of hyperbole, acceptance and measured responses to the idea of the Browns selecting Darnold at No. 1:

Pro Days are tricky things, especially for quarterbacks, since everything is planned out and they are basically just playing catch with a familiar wide receiver. JaMarcus Russell had an awesome Pro Day in 2007, while Peyton Manning famously had a poor one in 1998. And everyone knows how their respective NFL careers worked out.

Still, the Pro Days, private workouts and individual meetings are all part of the rubric that the Browns are using while deciding which quarterback is worth the No. 1 overall selection come next month.

It’s possible that the Browns have made up their minds that Darnold is the quarterback worth selecting with the draft’s top pick and today’s workout simply confirmed that believe. But they also have workouts with the other quarterbacks in consideration, so today was perhaps just another step in the process.

Next: Browns should keep an eye on Baker Mayfield

One way or another, everyone will know when the first round of the draft comes around on April 26.
