John Dorsey is just toying with the rest of the NFL
By Thomas Moore
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey is busy making headlines at the NFL owners meeting, but the joke might finally be on the rest of the NFL.
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey seems to really be enjoying himself.
Dorsey, who sat out last season after being fired as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, made his return to the annual NFL owners meeting in Orlando on Monday, and is having a grand time as the calendar ticks down to the 2018 NFL Draft.
Dorsey sent Browns Twitter on fire early in the day when the report dropped that he had coffee with Dave Gettleman, general manager of the New York Giants:
That, of course, led to considerable speculation that the Browns were on the cusp of making a trade for Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who appears to have worn out his welcome with the Giants despite three Pro Bowl appearances in four seasons.
(Sadly, the report did not indicate if Dorsey puts anything in his coffee or if he takes it black, like a true “football man.”)
As if that were not enough, Dorsey met with the media later in the day and reiterated that he is open to the idea of trading away the No. 1 overall selection in the upcoming draft, according to clevelandbrowns.com:
"“You have to explore all options. You never know until you know. We have to do that as an organization. To get us better I’ll explore every opportunity there is up until it comes time to make that pick. (The offer) better be pretty good.”"
Dorsey also confirmed that the New York Jets came calling about the top pick in the draft, but Dorsey found their offer lacking, resulting in the Jets working out a deal with the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 3 overall selection.

Finally, while not directly related to Dorsey, John McClain of The Houston Chronicle reports that word around the league is that not only will the Browns select a quarterback at No. 1, but they will double down by selecting a quarterback with the fourth-overall selection.
The thinking is that, if a quarterback-needy team needs a quarterback and fears the Browns are taking one with the fourth pick, a trade bounty will be coming Cleveland’s way. Or, the Browns could hold onto their second rookie quarterback and move him at the trading deadline.
While it is highly likely that the Browns will stay put and select a quarterback with the draft’s first pick, the second part of the scenario where they take another quarterback at No. 4 seems pretty far-fetched.
The same goes for trading away the No. 1 overall selection. Given that the Browns need a quarterback, and the reaction from the media and fans the past two seasons when the Browns worked draft trades, the Browns would have to receive the most one-sided trade offer in NFL history for Dorsey to move out of the top spot.
Next: Browns should be cautious about Odell Beckham Jr.
For now, though, it is clear that Dorsey is having the time of his life.
And, for once, Browns fans are in on the joke.
