Cleveland Browns: Late-round hidden gems to unearth
By Randy Gurzi
Darius Phillips, CB/WR/KR, Western Michigan
During his time at Western Michigan, Darius Phillps played both wide receiver and cornerback. He was also a sensational return man, which means whoever gives him a shot in the NFL will be getting a multi-talented player who can help in a myriad of ways.
Where he should make his mark though is as a return man and possible nickel corner. Phillips had five kickoff returns for touchdowns in four seasons and another punt return score. He also was excellent at creating turnovers as a corner, getting 12 picks in three seasons.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com discusses how he can help a team as an option covering slot receivers.
"“Ball-hawking cornerback with athletic ability and short area quickness to handle man coverage from slot and the instincts to play zone effectively. Phillips will have to move inside due to his lack of size so his issues in run support could be exploited by offensive coordinators. He should test well at the Combine so his draft value will depend directly on how teams prioritize toughness versus ball skills.” — Zierlein, NFL.com"
Currently Briean Boddy-Calhoun mans that role for the Browns, and does so very well. Phillips could provide some insurance there while also giving them options in the return game.
