The Cleveland Browns have been reportedly zeroing in on quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Though, is there an ulterior motive to these rumors?

The 2018 NFL Draft is just one month away and the speculation as to what the Cleveland Browns will do with the first pick is ramping up. We’ve heard about general manager John Dorsey‘s appreciation for quarterbacks Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen and Sam Darnold.

However, in the last week of March, everything is pointing towards Darnold as their guy. However, is Cleveland pumping out these rumors with hopes the New York Giants trade up for the No. 1 overall selection?

It is certainly a possibility.

In fact, many are reporting the Cleveland Browns actually prefer Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. And if you believe the Giants truly covet Darnold it makes sense for Cleveland to entice them to trade up for their guy.

Neither are expected to start as rookies and their weaknesses are no secret. Darnold’s consistency with his mechanics and turnover issues are apparent but his ability to create plays and get the ball out quickly are exciting. Allen, on the other hand, has an absolute cannon of an arm. Although, his inability to be consistently accurate is a massive concern for NFL teams.

The Browns are in the driver’s seat for the 2018 NFL Draft and they’re not going to show their cards until they have to. In the meantime – the reports of Josh Allen being the potential No. 1 pick are real. The Wyoming quarterback has visited Cleveland and this is his chance to prove his worth.

If the Browns truly do covet Allen over Darnold than why not tempt a team like the New York Giants to trade up to No. 1? After all, they need to eventually replace Eli Manning and if they believe Darnold can successfully transition the quarterback change than they absolutely should pull the trigger.
