Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms says potential Cleveland Browns draft pick Josh Allen has the highest ceiling — and floor — of quarterback prospects

Former Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen has all the intangibles and ticks off all the marks that the Cleveland Browns should look for in a quality starting NFL quarterback. While many fans bash him for his lack of accuracy in college, there are many different areas of his game that show he has the highest ceiling off all the NFL quarterback prospects in this year’s class, and even at his worst, the highest floor.

Everyone looks at Allen and knows immediately that he’s an athlete of some sort. His 6-foot-5-inch, 223-pound frame sets him apart from most others, as does his cannon arm and impressive mobility. This is the exact reason why more analysts are starting to put Allen at the top of the draft, sending him to the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick.

The most recent analyst to sign the praises of Allen is former NFL quarterback Chris Simms. Simms appeared on The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday and had high praise for the former Wyoming Cowboy.

"Josh Allen is the best [quarterback] to me. He…has the highest ceiling. And, other than Josh Rosen, Allen has the highest floor too.” — Simms on the DP Show"

Simms went further to say that Allen has elite traits, and that is something that teams should look for in the first-round, especially when it comes to a quarterback.

The former NFL player also said he isn’t worried about Allen’s accuracy, mostly because he doesn’t throw screens to help his completion percentage.

While Browns fans will likely riot on draft night if Allen’s name is called with the first pick, it isn’t a bad option. The team has Tyrod Taylor, a very good option, as the starting quarterback. This will allow Allen to come in and sit for a year and learn the nuances of the pro game.

General manager John Dorsey isn’t afraid to let a future starter sit for a year behind a veteran to learn. That is exactly what he did with quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it is something he will likely strongly consider in Cleveland as well.

Todd Haley also loves big quarterbacks, and he coaches them very well. Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers should be a prime example for what Allen could be.

If Cleveland goes for a quarterback with the first pick, Allen will most likely be that choice. His strong arm, mobility, and extreme athleticism makes his ceiling the highest. And the floor for his career potential isn’t nearly as low as the rest of the quarterback class in the 2018 draft.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should prepare for lots of boo’s if he calls Allen’s name as the Browns’ pick next Thursday. But look past the horrible stat that people try to use, that of the completion percentage, and you might just see what Simms does: a potential for an all star career for Josh Allen.
