Cleveland Browns: Jabrill Peppers could be draft day trade
By Joel W. Cade
The Cleveland Browns have a glaring need at safety. Even though players were brought in to take the position, Jabrill Peppers could be traded in a further attempt to upgrade the position.
The Cleveland Browns need serious help at safety.
Instead of trying to teach an athletic Jabrill Peppers to play a new position, the Browns should trade him and draft a strong safety.
Hear me out on this. Peppers is best when he can get his hands on the ball. Last season he played the “Angel” in the outfield defense. Unfortunatey, in that role he looked completely lost. He took bad angles and missed what should have been some easy tackles.
To say he struggled was an understatement. But he should be cut some slack because he was out of position.

But he cannot be cut slack for having a positive test at the combine. Also, he was highly regarded as an athlete coming out of college with no real position.
Like Josh Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft, Peppers was a potential over production pick. But at some point there needs to be production — not just the constant reliance of potential.

In the 2018 Draft, there are better athletes with a more refined skill set at the position than Jabrill Peppers. The secondary was so bad last year, the Browns must address it immediately.
Florida State’s Derwin James is a perfect fit for this defense. Still a project but knows the position.
There are other teams in the league who would be more than happy to take on an athletic project like Peppers. With some coaching and patience, he could turn out to be a great player. Historically the Browns have had neither consistent coaching or patience.

If the Browns seriously want to upgrade the safety position, trading Peppers for a shot at a safety like Derwin James is the way to go.
