Cleveland Browns: Getting the BuffaLowDown on Tyrod Taylor
By Randy Gurzi
Catching up with former Dawg Pound Daily site expert Steven Kubitza and asking him about the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor
Steven Kubitza used to be a site expert with Dawg Pound Daily, but now is doing some good work covering the Buffalo Bills at BuffaLowDown. His insight as a former Cleveland Browns writer is great to have now as the new starting quarterback came from the very team he’s covering in Western New York.
We recently caught up with Steven and asked him a few questions about the quarterbacks on both teams.
RG: Being that you used to cover the Browns, can you give us your feelings on Baker Mayfield being selected at No. 1 overall?

"SK: I really like the pick for the Browns. I personally would have loved to see Baker Mayfield end up in Buffalo, and clearly he was a hot commodity for NFL teams. The key for the Browns, as is the key for the Bills, is to let the rookie sit and learn.I know some Browns fans want to be patient. However, I also know the same fans will be chanting his name if Tyrod Taylor throws one bad pass in Week 1. Let’s hope John Dorsey doesn’t let Hue give in to the noise."
RG: What’s your opinion of Tyrod Taylor as a mentor to Mayfield and starter in the interim?
"SK: Tyrod Taylor is a great choice to lead the Browns in 2018. He is fresh off a postseason appearance and is arguably, in my opinion, the best QB to suit up for the Browns since they returned in 1999. I don’t understand why some Browns fans are already talking about moving on from him, but such is Cleveland. As a mentor, he is once again the perfect option. Taylor kept it professional when he was benched in favor of Nathan Peterman a season ago. The rookie had a horrible debut and all Taylor did was quietly return to the starting spot and take his team to the postseason. After so much drama surrounding the quarterback position in Cleveland, Taylor will help keep things quiet."
RG: Are you satisfied with the compensation Buffalo received in the trade?
"SK: I am because it was clear the team was ready to move on from Taylor. However, I am not among the contingent of Bills fans who thinks the team fleeced the Browns. I see it as fair compensation on both sides given the current state of both teams. It is odd to see a team trade its quarterback after making the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades, but that was part of the plan and the hope of a city now rests on the shoulders of Josh Allen."
RG: Josh Allen was discussed heavily by fans and media members in Cleveland. You probably know not all of that was positive. What’s your opinion of him?
"SK: Like 99 percent of people out there writing about football, I do not know enough about Allen to have a concrete opinion either way. I do believe that accuracy issues are concerning, but I’m willing to see what he can do with some NFL coaching and some time to learn the game. If only DeShone Kizer got that kind of team with the Browns last year.I am not the type of person to hate on a player before he steps on the field, so I’ll try to remain optimistic about Allen. The problem is knowing how these picks have turned out in the recent past, which Browns fans can relate to as well."
RG: Lastly, just for fun — if you could pluck one person from Cleveland’s current roster who would it be?
"SK: I will be bold and go with Josh Gordon. It appears as if he is back on the right track, and bringing him to Buffalo would give the team a true number one receiver for the first time in a long time. He can do it all and Bills Mafia would fall in love with him, given he stayed clean."
The best part of being in the FanSided Network is being able to reach out to people like Steven and get their take on the NFL. I would personally like to send a big thanks for taking the time to talk football with us.
