Cleveland Browns 2018 Offseason buzz exactly the same, only different.
By Mike Lukas
We have all felt the offseason hype for the Cleveland Browns before, just like we are now. However, it feels different this time.
There’s an excited buzz around the Cleveland Browns this offseason.
You know, like there was last offseason, and all the offseasons before that…
Just curious – after being fed front office false hopes and promises almost every offseason since 1999, why are so many Browns fans suddenly acting like they’re absolutely certain that 2018 is going to be different?

It’s truly shocking how many fans are going all in on the latest version of this consistently inconsistent football team, especially given how heartbroken they were last December.
And most Decembers before that.
Something’s got these normally cynical and dismissive Cleveland fans acting as upbeat and optimistic as hotties on Prom night.
What’s so different this offseason?
One word – Dorsey.
Since John Dorsey became the Browns’ general manager, things have felt different, and in a good way, like when your voice finally changes and the squeaking stops. For his part in the Browns five-year-turnaround, Dorsey has brought in more than two dozen new bodies to get the job done. Differently.
And the fans are feeling it.
Last year at this time, the Browns front office was doing their best to create the buzz that a rookie quarterback – basically an NFL team-leading and game-winning virgin – could be the guy. All DeShone Kizer had to do was lead a team of mostly rookies to victory over 16 well-oiled machines that were mostly powered by seasoned professionals.
Remember how that offseason buzz felt?
About as reassuring as a dented can.
Compare that to Dorsey’s 2018 offseason quarterback buzz. All he did was exactly what needed doing: emptied out the ineffective quarterback room and re-filled it with Tyrod Taylor, a playoff-experienced starter, Baker Mayfield, a franchise quarterback level rookie and Drew Stanton, an experienced journeyman willing to tutor Kid Mayfield on the sidelines.
Now that’s a sweet buzz, Mr. Dorsey.
As is bringing in a winning offensive coordinator like Todd Haley and keeping a killer defensive coordinator like Gregg Williams. But when (through free agency and the draft) offensive tools like wide receiver Jarvis Landry and running back Carlos Hyde are added and at the same time the defensive secondary is strengthened with free safety Damarious Randall and shutdown cornerback Denzel Ward, then oh boy, the Dorsey Browns buzz begins to vibrate at an entirely new level.
And have you heard Hue lately?
Whether or not you’re a fan of ‘luckiest coach alive’ Hue Jackson (lucky, as in gets to keep his job after going 1-31), Browns fans can’t help but get excited when they hear the head coach say stuff like he said to ClevelandBrowns.com:
"“The addition of John Dorsey and the personnel staff; the free agent period that we had and…the draft, putting really good talent on the team; the talent that was already here coupled with that gives me a sense of optimism that we truly can turn the corner.” — Jackson said via Patrick Maks of the team’s website"
And by Dorsey, that’s exactly what Browns fans are expecting to happen.
Add to that the fact that HBO has decided to feature the Browns 2018 turnaround on their hit (and possibly jinxed) football show, ‘Hard Knocks’ and you’ve got a must watch season that, at the very least, couldn’t be worse than the last.
According to the Browns five-year-turnaround plans, year three, this year, is when the winning starts.
And when the first Browns’ win in over a full season finally comes – and it will come – the fear of more embarrassment will begin to wane. And what will slowly take over is the expectation of greatness, the anticipation of victory and the belief that the team Dorsey built can topple anything in its way.

And right now there’s an offseason buzz in the air that they’re going to do just that this next NFL season.
And the season after that, and…
