The Cleveland Browns announced the signing of linebacker Mychal Kendricks on Tuesday, and also announced the team released linebacker Tank Carder to make room for Kendricks.

The Cleveland Browns made the signing of Mychal Kendricks offical on Tuesday after the circus surrounding his contract negotiations over the weekend. But in order to make room on the roster for Kendricks, the Browns released linebacker and special teams standut Tank Carder.

Carder was a backup linebacker for the Browns, starting in only two games during his time in Cleveland. He played his biggest role on special teams. In his career with the Browns, he totaled 34 total tackles in 78 career games.

Carder missed all of last season due to a knee injury. He was battling with Joe Schobert for the starting middle linebacker job during training camp last season, and was considered the favorite before the knee injury.

Carder had re-signed with the Browns this offseason on a one year, $790K contract.

Carder was drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL draft by the New York Giants. The Browns claimed Carder off waivers from the Giants in September of 2012.

After the trade of Joe Haden last season and the retirement of Joe Thomas, Carder was the longest tenured Cleveland Brown. Josh Gordon was drafted in 2012, but due to his various suspensions, he has not accrued the same amount of time on the active roster as Carder.

Following the release of Carder, Joel Bitonio and Christian Kirksey, drafted in 2014, are now the longest tenured Browns players.

Tank Carder thanked the Browns fans in a tweet Tuesday morning:

Although he never received the spotlight for his play on special teams, Carder had the respect of many Browns fans for his contributions to the team. He also received the respect of his teammates, as he was named a captain for the Browns during the 2016 season.
