Cleveland Browns: How Baker Mayfield can Become the Starter
By Shane Carter
Ball-Out
Baker Mayfield, for all his antcis was one very good college quarterback. His athleticism, accuracy and gamer mentality are what got him the Heisman Trophy, a spot in the college football playoffs, and picked number one in the draft. If he keeps going forward off this success, he could easily take the starting reins.
His mobility in and out of the pocket was a nightmare for college defenses, as well as his ability to throw on the run was near unstoppable. That is what the Browns want to see translate to the league. That skill was one of the traits that lead to the Browns taking him number first in the draft.
Obviously the college and professional games are different, but every best players are able to to translate their skills from one level to the next. If Mayfield can translate his, he could eventually be on the same level as the Andrew Luck’s and Russell Wilson’s of the NFL.
Win Everyone Over
What made Joe Thomas so beloved in Cleveland was not just his elite level of play. Joe Thomas wanted be there after so many before and during his time there that didn’t want to be there. Win over the fans and Mayfield can get his chance to play.
It might not be too hard to win the fans in Cleveland for a fan base that’s prepairing to lose LeBron for the second time and hasn’t had a quarterback since before Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé each went solo. The fans want their quarterback now.
