With the NFL Supplemental Draft just over two weeks away, the Cleveland Browns were in attendance for the workout of one of the four players that are entered into the draft.

The Cleveland Browns had one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL in 2017. General manager John Dorsey has spent his first off-season with the Browns trying to change that by rebuilding the team’s secondary.

The Browns started off by trading for Damarious Randall before free agency began to be the starting free safety. During free agency, Dorsey signed cornerbacks T.J. Carrie, Terrance Mitchell and E.J. Gaines. The Browns also used the fourth overall pick on cornerback Denzel Ward and a sixth round pick on Simeon Thomas in the 2018 NFL Draft.

But Dorsey may not be done adding to the secondary before training camp. The Browns were in attendance for the workout of former Mississippi State defensive back Brandon Bryant on Monday, according to Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. Bryant is eligible to be selected in the 2018 NFL supplemental draft. NFL senior analyst Gil Brandt shared the results of Bryant’s workout.

Bryant played three seasons for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. In 37 games, Bryant made 157 total tackles, including 1.5 sacks. He intercepted five passes, returning one for a touchdown, and forced one fumble.

Bryant showed the potential of being a play-making safety after he intercepted three passes in 2015. But he was unable to continue to show that potential after he only intercepted one pass in each of the past two seasons.

Mississippi State did not let Bryant join the team for spring practices this season due to academics, according to Goodbread. Bryant then announced that he would be leaving the school, and then later applied for the supplemental draft.

The Browns may have just been doing their due-diligence in attending Bryant’s workout. But with how much Cleveland has done in rebuilding their secondary this off-season. it would not be a surprise to see them offer a pick on Bryant or one of the two other defensive backs in the supplemental draft.

If the Browns were to offer a bid on Bryant and offered the highest bid, they would give up a pick in the corresponding round in the 2019 NFL Draft. For example, if the Browns offer a third round bid on Bryant and they are the highest bidder, they would give up a third round pick in the 2019 Draft to select Bryant.

The Browns have the highest selection in each round as they had the worst record during the 2017 season. The Browns have selected two players in the supplemental draft: Bernie Kosar in 1985 and Josh Gordon in 2012. The supplemental draft will be held on July 11.
