Baker Mayfield comes in as the highest rated rookie quarterback on the new version of Madden, and it’s not just because the Cleveland Browns chose him No. 1

Die hard NFL fans don’t have much longer to wait until they get their hands on the newest version of Madden NFL Football. The 2019 version of the game is set to release on Aug. 10, but we don’t have to wait to see how some of the rookies for the Cleveland Browns will be rated.

The most notable of course is quarterback Baker Mayfield, who the Browns took at No. 1 overall out of Oklahoma.

It was a bit of a controversial pick with many expecting it — even hoping for it — to be Sam Darnold out of USC. Cleveland shocked a lot of people by going against the traditional style quarterback and taking the undersized, but extremely talented Mayfield instead.

More from Browns News

Well if Madden has anything to say about it, the Browns got it right. Mayfield comes in as the highest-rated rookie quarterback in the class according to NFL.com.

Mayfield, who is rated an 81 overall, edges out Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, the last pick in the first-round. Jackson got a 79 and is followed by Josh Rosen of the Arizona Cardinals at 78. Darnold, the No. 3 pick of the New York Jets, comes in at fourth with an overall rating of 74.

These ratings highlight what many who defend the pick for Mayfield have been trying to say — he has the best set of skills of any of the quarterbacks coming in. The one knock continues to be his height, but that’s overplayed. Had he been two-inches taller, he would be a sure-fire No. 1 overall pick.

Cleveland did well for themselves beyond the Mayfield pick according to Madden as well. No. 4 overall pick Denzel Ward made the top-five defenders list with a rating of 80. They didn’t stop there as No. 35 overall pick Nick Chubb was a top-five running back with a 76 overall.

Of course this is just a video game, but it’s still exciting to see the positive news keep rolling in for Cleveland after this offseason. However, just because it’s only a game doesn’t mean they didn’t get it right.

Mayfield was the best option and the good people at Madden got this one right. Like they often do.
