Cleveland Browns: 3 Players with rising stock, training camp Week 1
By Randy Gurzi
3. Corey Coleman, Wide Receiver
If there’s anyone in a Browns’ uniform that needed some positivity, it was Corey Coleman. The former first-round pick has struggled mightily the first couple seasons he’s been in the NFL and then reportedly had a rough start to camp.
After getting an earful from offensive coordinator Todd Haley for not fighting through some physical defense, Coleman started to make some plays. He showed a good rapport with Baker Mayfield and had his best day on Sunday according to many who were in attendance. The best news about that is he wasn’t even supposed to be on the field that day.
Head coach Hue Jackson had several guys resting to try and fight off any soft tissue injuries and Coleman told the coach he was more concerned with playing. Mary Kay Cabot shared a Tweet where Jackson spoke of Coleman stepping up.
This was really a double-win for Coleman. All offseason there have been questions about not only his ability, but also his durability. In one day he did his best to answer both.
With Josh Gordon missing part of camp and rookie Antonio Callaway still behind him on the depth chart, this is Coleman’s time to stake his claim for a starting wide receiver job.
