The Cleveland Browns have a revamped secondary, creating a lot of buzz about the new players that could make an impact. But the former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback is flying under the radar.

When talking about the Cleveland Browns improved secondary, most of the talk surrounds the potential starting cornerbacks.

Denzel Ward has been impressive in his short time with the team and has already earned one of the starting cornerback jobs in 2018.

Opposite of Ward, there is a lot of focus going towards the competition between T.J. Carrie and E.J. Gaines. Both are free agent signings that are going to be having an entertaining battle for the starting job on the opposite side of Ward.

But the player that has not received the attention that he should is another free agent signing: Terrance Mitchell. Mitchell is coming off of a career-year with the Kansas City Chiefs. In 15 games for the Chiefs last season, starting nine, Mitchell made 52 total tackles, four interceptions, and 18 passes defended.

When Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey was the general manager of the Chiefs, he signed Mitchell to the team’s practice squad in 2016. When Mitchell was a free agent this off-season, Dorsey signed him to a three-year, $12 million contract to bring him to Cleveland.

Mitchell’s style of play fits perfectly for what Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams wants out of his cornerbacks. Mitchell is a physical corner, matching well with Williams wanting to play more press coverage.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports was recently in Cleveland watching Browns camp, and shared some of his observations about the Browns, mentioning Mitchell.

"Coaches are quietly high on corner Terrance Mitchell (a free agent Dorsey knew well from Kansas City) and linebacker Genard Avery, a rookie from Memphis. – Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports"

Mitchell is not a big corner at 5-foot-11 and 191 pounds, but he fits well as a slot corner. If the Browns are as high on Mitchell as La Canfora notes, he could be the team’s slot corner when they are in their nickel defense.

Of all the additions the Browns made to the secondary this off-season, Mitchell is the most overlooked. Coming off a solid season, he could have an even bigger season in a bigger role with the Browns.

Next. Browns need to remain patient with Baker Mayfield. dark

The Browns will have a lot of flexibility with who they will play at cornerback, as they have plenty of talent at the position. But if Mitchell continues to have a strong camp, he could have the most surprising role of any Browns player in 2018.
