Best Rookie

Dawg Pound Daily’s “Best Rookie” award goes to, of course, the rookie who had the biggest immediate impact on the team during training camp. This could be a first-rounder, fifth-rounder, or even an undrafted free agent who lit the world on fire during camp.

This year’s nominees were quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, No. 4 overall selection, cornerback Denzel Ward, and fifth-round linebacker Genard Avery. This year, the tremendous honor of Best Rookie goes to quarterback Baker Mayfield, coming to the Browns by way of Oklahoma University.

First the Heisman, then the distinction of being the No. 1 overall draft pick, and now this, one of the biggest prizes in Browns’ training camp. Mayfield is electric on and off the field and is constantly looking to make plays and bring his teammates up with him. The ever-charismatic Mayfield has captured the heart of the Dawg Pound, and his mission is clear. That is, bring the Browns to new heights throughout his career. With this Best Rookie award in hand, it appears he may just be up to that challenge.

Ward and Avery were excellent challengers, but at the end of the day, the rookie quarterback Mayfield came prepared. He made tremendous strides throughout all of camp, and his progress showed in the first preseason game, in which he lit up the New York Giants. 11-20, 212 yards, and a 20-10 win against the Giants is one way to cement yourself in Browns training camp history. Congratulations on the newest award to add to your trophy cabinet, My. Mayfield.
