Wide Receiver Derrick Willies

One of the young receivers that has put Janis on the roster bubble, Derrick Willies has opened some eyes this preseason. Playing with the second-team and third-team offenses, Willies has made some solid plays for the Browns.

His case is also helped by him building chemistry with the Browns’ franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield. Although Willies only has two catches for 26 yards this preseason, he has been targeted by Mayfield quite a few times.

At 6-foot-4, Willies brings the potential of being a red zone threat for the Browns. In the Browns’ second preseason game against the Bills, Willies caught two touchdown passes. However, both were negated due to a penalty on one and the other being overturned by official review after Willies was unable to get a second foot down in tight quarters on the side of the end zone.

Willies has also seen a lot of time at special teams, which is why he has the best chance at overtaking Janis for the final roster spot.

One thing that coaches can’t teach players is height, and Willies has that. With the starters not expected to play long against the Lions, Willies has a big opportunity at showing that he deserves the final wide receiver roster spot.
