The Cleveland Browns lost a heartbreaker to the Oakland Raiders in Week 4 and we look now at three studs and three duds in the overtime defeat

This one hurt. It was the first start in Baker Mayfield‘s career as the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and they nearly escaped Oakland Coliseum with a win. And that would have been a feat considering how bad they seemed to try and give this one away.

The Browns and Raiders were caught in a back and forth duel that saw each team look to be in full control of the game for long stretches. When the fourth quarter got rolling, however, the Browns looked ready to put it away.

After Oakland took a one-point lead at 34-28, Cleveland went to work and went up 35-34 on a Carlos Hyde touchdown run — which capped off a seven-play drive that was highlighted by a 59-yard pass from Mayfield to fellow rookie Antonio Callaway.

They then extended the lead to 42-34 as Nick Chubb ripped off a long touchdown to put the team up by eight points. Then, the heartache set in.

Cleveland’s defense held the Raiders on downs and got the ball back with a chance to run the clock out. There were less than two minutes remaining and all they had to do was get one first down and it was win No. 2. Carlos Hyde did that by lunging forward on a third-and-short and it was time to celebrate.

Until it wasn’t.

The referees decided to take a look at the play and after reviewing it, they decided it wasn’t a first down after all. The visual evidence seemed to suggest otherwise, which made this call even tougher to swallow.

Cleveland than surrendered a touchdown and two-point conversion which led to overtime and an eventual loss. They fell to 1-2-1 in the defeat and it’s hard not to be angry at the refs, even though there were other factors that determined this game.

Here we look back over the wild game and pick three studs and three duds from the Browns in Week 4.
