Stud: Damarious Randal, Free Safety

The Browns made a nice move to get Damarious Randall from the Green Bay Packers. He’s been a ballhawk for them since coming over and entered this game with an interception and a fumble recovery on his resume.

He added a third takeaway since donning the orange helmet when he picked off Derek Carr and ran it back 50 yards. On top of that, Randall had six tackles, one of which went for a loss of yards

Simply put, Randall has a nose for the ball and has given the team the centerfield safety they have craved for years.

Dud: Amos Jones and the special teams

As good as Randall has been, the special teams have been just as bad. Jabrill Peppers as a return man simply isn’t working and their ability to cover on punts is breathtakingly bad.

Against Oakland, special teams coach Amos Jones saw his unit surrender 98 yards on five returns to Dwayne Harris. In contrast, the Browns had 10 yards returning punts.

It could have been even worse had Antonio Callaway lost his fumble on a return late in the game. Running backward into the end zone, the rookie fielded it a yard deep with his momentum going the wrong way. He ran it out when he shouldn’t have and it was almost disaster as he coughed the ball up.

It was easy to forget because the fumble was overturned, but considering how the calls were going, it wouldn’t have been surprising to see that fumble stand. Callaway should know not to run it out there and it’s on Jones to stress such things. And to make sure they cover people returning punts.
