Cleveland Browns: Surprises and disappointments at quarter mark of 2018
By Dan Justik
Surprise: Terrance Mitchell
When the Browns signed Mitchell in the off-season, many saw the signing as general manager John Dorsey building depth in Cleveland’s secondary. But through the first four games of the season, Mitchell has been one of the better players on the Browns defense.
Mitchell’s physical style of play has matched well with Gregg Williams’ aggressive press-man defense. The concern with Mitchell was that he would draw too many penalties. However, that has not been an issue for the 26-year-old cornerback.
Through the first four games of the season, Mitchell has compiled 19 total tackles, two forced fumbles, one interception, and three passes defended. His performance has played a huge part in the Browns secondary becoming a stout unit.
Unfortunately for the Browns defense, Mitchell suffered a broken wrist against the Raiders and will be out for an unknown amount of time. His injury will force the Browns’ hand, as defenses will likely target his replacement.
When Mitchell was on the field, his strong coverage made it difficult for quarterbacks, as he and Denzel Ward would both play tight coverage.
Despite his injury, Mitchell’s performance this season has helped the Browns secondary become a much improved unit. And for what his role was expected to be entering the season, Mitchell has certainly been a surprise.
