Surprise: Damarious Randall

The Cleveland Browns traded for Damarious Randall over the off-season before free agency. They decided to move him to free safety after he played cornerback his first three seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. At the quarter mark of the season, it is obvious that Randall playing safety was the right move.

Randall has been a force in the back end of the Browns defense, as he has been a ball hawk over the middle of the field. Defenses are not having much success with deep shots due to Randall’s ability to range over and make a play on the ball.

But Randall has also excelled at making tackles in space. Instead of overrunning plays, Randall has been able to get to the ball carrier, break down and make the tackle.

On the season, Randall has made 19 total tackles, two interceptions, and six passes defended. His play this season has him being seen as one of the most over-looked safeties in the NFL this year.

The secondary has been vital to the Browns having a strong defense this season. Because of Randall’s ability to play great coverage over the deep middle of the field, it allows Williams to make some aggressive play-calls.

How Randall would play after being moved to safety was one of the bigger questions this season. He has shocked everybody, and is playing at a rate that could get him voted to the Pro Bowl.
