E.J. Gaines made his first start in a Cleveland Browns uniform against the Ravens and his performance was an encouraging sign for the defense.

E.J. Gaines made his first start with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, and he put up a performance that will excite the fans and the coaching staff.

Gaines did not have much of a role in the Browns’ defense before starting cornerback Terrance Mitchell suffered an injury last week. No one knew how well he would play stepping into the new starting role. Against the Ravens, Gaines made it seem like he has been starting the entire season.

Gaines made four total tackles and two passes defended against Baltimore. He also had a chance to intercept a pass, but could not corral the ball as he dove to the ground.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco looked Gaines’ way often, but Gaines would not back down. On multiple occasions, Gaines was locked on the receiver’s hip and was able to make a play on the ball. Despite Flacco’s concentrated effort, Gaines rarely gave Flacco a chance to deliver a strike to the receiver he was defending.

Last week, Mitchell suffered a broken wrist against the Raiders and was placed on injured reserve. His injury was expected to be a blow to the Browns defense.

Mitchell was a key cog in helping the Browns defense become an improved unit, and there were concerns that whoever would replace him would not be able to make the plays that Mitchell was making.

Mitchell’s physical style of play made it difficult for receivers to create space. He was also creating turnovers, as he forced two fumbles and one interception in four games this season.

But in his first start, Gaines was able to lock down one side of the field. He did not force a turnover on Sunday, but there were opportunities for Gaines to intercept a couple of passes. As he continues to get more reps, Gaines will likely take advantage of those opportunities.

Gaines stepped up to the challenge of replacing Mitchell on Sunday. If he can continue to play like he did against the Ravens, the Browns defense will not miss a step with Mitchell on IR.
