The Cleveland Browns are making a statement to their fans, the division, and to the rest of the National Football League, one victory at a time.

The Cleveland Browns defeated the Baltimore Ravens by a knuckleball from Greg Joseph in overtime Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The victory puts the Browns at 2-2-1 on the young NFL season. But what does this win mean for the organization?

This was, quite simply, a statement game for the Browns. The Ravens rolled into First Energy Stadium averaging just over 30 points per game and boasting a top-five offense, defense, and special team’s unit. They also came into the game scoring 20 plus points in 13 straight games, which was tops in the league.

Joe Flacco was 17-2 in his career against the Browns entering Sunday. None of that mattered to this Cleveland Browns team. The Ravens left with nine points and a loss. Winning the games that you should not win is how you make a statement in this league.

It was a statement to the fans that it is okay to expect more from this year’s team. We know you’ve been hurt many times over the years. You’re guarded, and rightly so, but it is okay to wrap your arms around this year’s team.

The Browns will be in every single game on the schedule. The fluky wins are behind us, and our victories will be earned and deserved. It’s okay to enjoy Sundays again.

They’ve made a statement to the AFC North that no longer can you just roll your helmets out there, and get two extra bye weeks each season. Matter-of-fact, bring your A-game, or you just might get embarrassed.

The Browns are moving out of the basement, and have their eyes set on that master bedroom. Preferably one with a view.

And finally, to the league: this is not a mirage. Your eyes do not deceive you. The Browns defense are the real deal. They’re going to get after your quarterback. They’re going to force turnovers. They have an elite pass rusher as well as a top-flight cornerback. If you were going to build a championship level defense, that is how you would start.

Oh, yeah…they also found their quarterback. A bearded gun-slinger with a knack for making big plays when it’s time to make one. That is a dangerous combination.
