Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates, Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward and Chargers safety Derwin James square off at First Energy Stadium in Week 6.

Even though they will not be on the field at the same time, Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward and Chargers safety Derwin James will most definitely be competing. Both defensive backs were first round Draft picks, both were day one starters, and both are front-runners for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Back on April 26th, Ward and James were on opposite ends of the draft day perception. The Cleveland Browns were thought to have reached for Ward when they took him with the fourth overall pick, making him the first defensive player selected. On the other hand, James was thought to be an absolute steal falling all the way to the Los Angeles Chargers to the 17th overall selection.

James has been playing lights out football since arriving in Los Angeles. The 6-foot-2, 215 pound safety out of Florida State is the most versatile player on the Chargers defense.

Through five games he leads the Chargers in solo tackles (24), total tackles (31), sacks (three), and is tied for the team lead in interceptions with one.

James has already proven to be a player that you must game-plan for. He will no doubt be giving quarterbacks and offensive coordinators headaches for years to come.

Ward’s play at cornerback for the Browns has been nothing less than stellar. The Ohio native has already racked up two defensive rookie of the week awards through the first five games of the season.

He has blocked a kick, forced a fumble (which he also recovered), and he leads the Browns with three interceptions.

Ward is quickly gaining respect around the league for his dynamic playmaking abilities, and any thought of him being a reach has been dismissed.

Sunday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium could prove to be pivotal in the battle for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Whichever rookie is able to make the biggest game-changing plays will have a perceived leg up in the Defensive Rookie of the Year race. And as we all know…perception is reality.
