Following a 2-2-1 start, and a divisional win against the Baltimore Ravens, all eyes were on Baker Mayfield and the Browns. But, the Browns played their first truly awful game on Sunday, losing by a score of 38-14.

Since coming into the game against the New York Jets, rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has been one of the Cleveland Browns’ consistent saving graces. Mayfield has made play after play, but played his first truly bad game on Sunday. In addition to an injury, Mayfield really looked like a rookie, and the Browns got trounced by the Los Angeles Chargers, 38-14. Let’s get some instant reactions.

The Browns Need  Better Receivers

Help us, Breshad Perriman; you’re our only hope. Yes, the Browns receivers were quite awful in Week 6, dropping two “sure thing” touchdown passes from Mayfield. One could even argue that there were three dropped touchdown passes from Mayfield.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

Had Cleveland’s receivers been able to hold on to passes Mayfield was the throwing, Cleveland would have at least stayed in the game through the first half. As awful as it sounds, this game felt like a Browns game from 2017, and that is something fans should never have to endure again.

Defense Looked Pedestrian

Through five games, the Cleveland Browns’ trademark was their defense. Denzel Ward, Joe Schobert, Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, and others seemed to be coming together to form a premier unit in the NFL. Today, the Browns defense got absolutely lit up.

I personally predicted that the Los Angeles Chargers would cause the Browns death by one thousand paper cuts. Since the Dawg Pound defense is so aggressive, it would be much easier for Philip Rivers and company to get short passes and runs that added up to a lethal drive. That was not the case.

The Chargers gashed the Browns over, and over, and over again for multiple big plays. Philip Rivers had a tremendous game, Keenan Allen killed the Browns on repeated end-arounds, and Austin Ekeler found a few seams throughout the day.

Special Teams: Objectively Horrible

Every week, every single week, there has been a massive gaffe by the Cleveland Browns on special teams. Is it the kicker? Maybe. Is it the blockers on punts and kicks? Sometimes. Is it the coach? Almost definitely.

I am not one to call for a coach’s head; there are livelihoods, jobs, and serious money involved. In today’s pound-of-flesh society, it seems a lot of people are often too quick to want to fire a coach. But Amos Jones, it is time for you to go. The Browns have the worst special teams units in the league this season, by a long shot, and Jones is the biggest culprit.

It’s hard not to be made at Cleveland’s special teams unit. They did not cost the Browns this game, but they’ve cost them little bits and pieces here and there that always add up. The time has come that the special teams, especially their coordinator, answer to their actions. The only one not at fault here is punter Britton Colquitt. Keep chugging alone, Mr. Colquitt. You don’t deserve this.
