Cleveland Browns: Next two weeks tell Hue Jackson’s fate
Despite coaching the Cleveland Browns to their best start since 2014, Hue Jackson’s seat is heating up. After a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Jackson has two more weeks to prove that he can coach the Browns to consistent victories.
Hue Jackson has become infamous in Cleveland. How Jimmy and Dee Haslam made the decision to keep him after one win in his first two years is mystifying, but the fact stands that Jackson is still the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
The team has improved this year, already sitting with two wins on the season, but Jackson’s seat just got a little bit warmer.
Following a 38-14 thumping at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers, the Browns are once again under the .500 mark for this season. Despite a massive talent upgrade thanks to general manager John Dorsey, and what looks like a young star quarterback in Baker Mayfield, the Browns sit at 2-3-1 on the year.

What is most intriguing about this particular loss, though, is that for the first time, the Browns seemed to quit on Hue Jackson.
Their vaunted defense totally fell apart, Melvin Gordon looked like the greatest running back of all time, and Philip Rivers carved up the secondary. Jackson’s trademark has been that he always gets his players to play hard, but now, he might be losing them.
This isn’t to say that the Haslams and John Dorsey should start constructing a coaching short list, though. Hue Jackson still has a shot, a chance to keep things going in the Browns organization. The next two games hold the keys to his fate as a head coach.
The next two games could be the most important set of contests in Hue Jackson’s coaching career. This coming Sunday, the Browns will have to regroup against a struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers team.
Then in week eight, Cleveland will travel to Pittsburgh for a rematch with the Steelers, who they tied with in week one. Then, the season will be past the halfway point, and Jackson will likely know his fate.
Time is ticking on the Hue Jackson clock for many reasons. One, of course, being that his coaching has been subpar for over two years now. And two, the Browns no longer have to worry about the “who’s left?” problem.
That is to say, the Browns can afford to fire Jackson because, unlike other years, they will likely be a desirable coaching destination for NFL head coach hopefuls. A young stud quarterback and a highly-improved roster can make any destination a great one.
After weeks seven and eight, the Browns should know Hue Jackson’s fate. Either this is an all-timer of a redemption story, or Jackson’s fate will be sealed by the time Cleveland hits the bye week in week eleven. The clock is ticking, and if the Browns go 0-2 over the next two weeks, time might be up.
